Russians called for help in raising funds for the construction of a Russian Orthodox church in Rome

The Fund for Supporting the Construction of a Russian Orthodox Church in Rome turned to the Russians calling for participation in the raise funds for the construction of this church.

"We need not only your material, but also prayer assistance," the fund’s appeal, the text of which is quoted by Interfax today.

The document notes that the need to build the first Orthodox church in Rome is primarily caused by the multiplicity of the flock of the Russian Orthodox Church in this city.

The temple will be built on the Yanikul hill, in the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral of St. Peter. St. Catherine, in honor of which the church will be named, equally revered by the Orthodox and Catholics.

The first attempt to build an Orthodox temple in Rome was made at the end of the 19th - early 20th centuries on the initiative of the rector of the Russian Embassy Church and with the support of the royal family. But then the revolution prevented the implementation of this plan.

At the turn of the XX and XXI centuries, the idea of ​​building a temple was again raised by the Orthodox community and received the blessing of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II .
