US Ministry of Defense asks for money for nuclear missiles

US Secretary of Defense Donald Ramsfeld on Wednesday turned to Congress with a request for the allocation of funds necessary to finance the creation of a new class of nuclear ammunition - the so -called "bunker -baster", which is a missile warhead that is intended to destroy the high -strength underground structures of the enemy, writes Gazeta.ru .

Financing these developments was suspended last year. “In my opinion, these studies can be of great importance for the whole world,” said the head of the American defense department at a meeting of the subcommittee for budgetary appropriations. California Senator Dayni Faynstein, criticizing Ramsfeld’s proposals, said: “It is not clear to me how you are going to carry out this program if the laws do not allow you to deepen the charge deep enough so that the explosion does not cause radioactive pollution on the surface. The Bush administration asks Congress in 2006 to allocate $ 8.5 million for the development of a new ammunition, which is supposed to be distributed between the Pentagon and the Ministry of Energy. Last year, it was proposed to allocate $ 27 million for these purposes, but Congress did not satisfy the request. Critics of conducting these studies in the Congress say that even a discussion of the possibility of conducting such developments will change the nuclear security situation in such a way that many other states of the world will be forced to follow the US example.
