The commander of Ukrainian peacekeepers in Iraq was detained for smuggling

The press service of the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine reports the detention for smuggling Major General Sergei Savchenko.

According to the press service, during the commission of the crime, Savchenko held the position of commander of the Ukrainian military contingent in Iraq.

At the same time, the press service does not specify when the crime was committed, Interfax reports.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also does not specify whether the detention is related to the previously released fact of currency smuggling.

As reported, the Security Service of Ukraine detained a group of military personnel on February 9, who, using their official position, established a channel of illegal import of foreign currency to Ukraine.

In February, in the Ukrainian plane, which flew from Iraq to the Kiev airport "Borispol" through Nikolaev, in Nikolaev they found smuggled currency - 319.5 thousand dollars .

According to the agency in the press service of the Nikolaev customs, several packages with currency were discovered among the things of the crew of the aircraft and Ukrainian military. The money was packaged in order to hide it from customs control - in the box of the Botradrian radio, in sports shoes in the baggage of one of the military, in lighter cases, musical players, lantern and camera.

The military said that the currency belongs to other persons, and they themselves are only carriers.
