| The battle for the harvest in Russia is not without casualties The battle for the harvest in the Sverdlovsk region claimed two lives in one day: first, 18-year-old student Dmitry Kazantsev died in the field, and a few hours later it became known about a murder in the village of Reftinsky, where local resident Lyudmila Nizamutdinova defended her property with a shovel in her hands. The regional police department believes that the situation is not dramatic - despite the two deaths, the current harvesting campaign, it turns out, is going much calmer than previous ones.
The first death occurred on the educational farm of the Ural Agricultural Academy “Uralets”, where first-year students were undergoing introductory practice. Since Soviet times, this has been the name given to the banal harvesting of vegetables in sponsored farms, which are subsequently used in the university canteen. According to the head of the practice, Alexander Bykov, the emergency happened while harvesting potatoes. To optimize the process, all students are divided into two groups: the majority collects root crops, while the smaller group, but consisting of the most physically strong students, loads bags of potatoes into tractors. The deceased Dmitry Kazantsev was part of the second group. Mr. Bykov recalls that on the day of the tragedy everyone worked according to this system. The tragedy occurred when an 18-year-old student decided to jump on a tractor while the car was moving. He jumped, but couldn’t resist and fell under the wheels. The unit, two-thirds full, immediately ran over the student. The result was an open fracture of the arm, broken ribs, and damage to the lungs.
The Beloyarsky district police department reported that an investigation into this fact has been launched. There is no information yet about the initiation of a criminal case. The police only voice the following data: there were about two tons of potatoes in the tractor, there was a violation of safety regulations, and the degree of guilt of the driver, who also turned out to be a student who recently received his license, is being considered. In addition, there is a dispute with the ambulance service. Her team arrived at the scene half an hour later - the doctors could not find the way to the farm for a long time. From the testimony of witnesses to the incident, it is known that before the doctors appeared, Dmitry Kazantsev was still alive, but died in the hospital. Investigators are also looking into the degree of culpability of the university's management, determining whether safety instructions were given and trying to find out why the facility did not have its own medical worker.
Meanwhile, the academy itself does not admit its guilt. Immediately after the emergency, all students were given a lecture on behavior during the harvesting campaign and the rules of punishment for violating them were announced. Now, throwing a potato at a fellow student can become a reason for expulsion from the university. At the same time, the academy does not intend to stop using students in cleaning campaigns. Other Ural universities took a similar position.
The second death, which also became the reason for initiating a criminal case, occurred on private property. A resident of the village of Reftinsky (Sverdlovsk region), Lyudmila Nizamutdinova, beat up a robber who encroached on her potatoes. According to the accused herself, she grew root crops with her mother, an 80-year-old pensioner, and was very worried when, at the end of August, unknown people began digging up the crop several rows a night. Deciding to punish the brazen thieves, the woman set up an ambush and caught the attacker.
In her testimony, which she now gives to the prosecutor's office, the woman claims that she first began to appeal to the robber's conscience, but when she heard from him: “I took it as I took it, so I will take it!” - she couldn’t stand it and began to hit him on the head with the handle of a shovel. According to doctors, the thief died from blunt head trauma. His identity has not yet been established, but now she faces up to 15 years in prison for murder. Now she is under recognizance not to leave. The prosecutor's office classifies her actions as lynching.
The Central Internal Affairs Directorate of the Sverdlovsk Region believes that, despite two “harvest” incidents in one day, this year the harvesting campaign is proceeding without much intensity. In the regions neighboring the Middle Urals, everything is completely calm. The press service of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate of the Chelyabinsk Region suggested to a Vremya Novostei correspondent that the absence of thieves was due to a scandal two years ago. Then the residents of the holiday village tracked down one of the thieves of a private harvest and crucified him not far from the crime scene. Since then, the number of thefts during harvest has dropped sharply. Mikhail VIUGIN, Ekaterinburg |
