The Federation Council approved on Wednesday the law on the return of the city of Bednodemyanovsk of the Penza region of the historical name - Spassk.
The initiative to return the city of its historical name was made by local residents. She was supported by the governor of the Penza region Vasily Bochkarev and the regional legislative assembly, ITAR-TASS reports.
In June of this year , the State Duma of the Russian Federation voted to rename the city of Bednodemyanovsk in Spassk.
The settlement, in the place of which the city later grew, was founded in the 17th century and later became known as the village of Novospassky, and under Empress Catherine II was renamed the county city of Spassk.
However, in 1925, by the decision of the leadership of the USSR, this city was renamed the city of Bednodemyanovsk in honor of the poet Demyan Poor, which, however, had nothing to do with the city - he was not born here, did not live and never even have been. Currently, 7800 people live in the city.
