Supporters of the former Georgian president say that Tsotne Gamsakhurdia was depressed due to the unfavorable situation in the country. Gamsakhurdia’s eldest son from his first marriage, 43-year-old Konstantin, and his youngest (he is from his second marriage, like his middle one), Georgiy, are on duty at the hospital.
Zviad Gamsakhurdia, overthrown by the opposition in January 1992, fled to Grozny with his wife and two younger sons, where he was sheltered by Dzhokhar Dudayev. In September 1993, Gamsakhurdia returned and led his armed supporters from Western Georgia to Tbilisi. With the help of units of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which was approached by the then head of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze, the Zviadists were driven back. Gamsakhurdia himself died in the Georgian mountains at the end of 1993 under unclear circumstances - either from illness, or he was eliminated by the Georgian special services.
The Zviadists were united by the widow of former president Manana Archvadze, who periodically holds protests in Tbilisi. The eldest son, Konstantin, returned to Georgia from Switzerland, where he lived for many years, and led the opposition movement “Freedom”. It is possible that in 2009 Konstantin Gamsakhurdia will run for president. Georgy Gamsakhurdia served as a police officer under Eduard Shevardnadze, but what he is doing now is unknown.
Several years ago, Tsotne Gamsakhurdia was assistant to the mayor of Batumi on foreign economic issues. But in 1999, in the center of Tbilisi, he got involved in a fight, seriously wounding a famous Georgian water polo player with a pistol, and hid for a long time after that.
