| How to become happy? This question is answered by psychologist Alla SPIVAKOVSKAYA, professor at the Faculty of Psychology at Moscow State University and the author of the original psychotherapeutic system “Beatotherapy.” Beatus means “happy, blessed” in Latin. Having been doing her business for more than 30 years, Alla Spivakovskaya came to the conclusion that the main goal of psychotherapy is human happiness. And not at all in the sense that most people think.
-What is happiness?
- Happiness is when a person understands himself. Beatotherapy operates on the premise that the process of learning and understanding oneself produces happiness. Because happiness is human nature. He becomes unhappy due to delusions, due to the negative unconscious. When you begin to study yourself and come to the being within yourself, you become happy. Anyone who wants to be happy needs to do some work. We need to escape from the system, from the networks, to break out of prison. Existence is a constant renewal. If you want to be with being, you must learn to be new at every moment. This means that everything old must die. But the old thing was so familiar! Like a safety rope. And they tell you: “Let’s throw this rope and go somewhere unknown.” It's very difficult.
- What prevents you from being happy? As they say, everything is fine with nutrition, but for some reason there is no happiness.
- Every person must understand for himself what prevents him from being happy. First of all, this is a low level of consciousness. State of sleep. This is our main prison. Relatively speaking, we are working at the wrong intensity. It has been known since ancient times that we are all in a waking dream. Because our everyday intensity of consciousness, emotions, determination, actions is weak.
- Why is this happening?
- Firstly, because a person has negative emotions, because his thoughts are small in scale. Because he believes in false values. Because he doesn't know a lot about himself. We think that we are born for misfortune. Listen to what people say.
- Especially if we take into account the social experience of our country in recent decades. What is called “collective social trauma”.
- Society is always terrible. This is a machine, it is alien to man. It's not that simple, of course. On the one hand, to be human, we need to master all social skills because we are born incomplete. At first, the system gives us a lot of useful things. But then it enslaves us, creates a prison of the mind. We begin to accept someone else's things as our own.
--Who is beatotherapy addressed to?
- In principle, it applies to everyone. Its meaning is to create conditions for a person to change himself and his life and become happy. Happiness is completeness.
- Well, what is the key? A man comes to you and says: “I’m unhappy.” How do you start working with him?
- This is a long process. Don't think that you come to one session and immediately become happy. I am not a charlatan, not a psychic who will wave his hands, say some words - and a person will become happy. Happiness must be snatched away. You need to escape from prison. This is for the cunning and the strong.
- So it’s still not for everyone? Not everyone is cunning and strong?
- Not for everyone. I deal with those who want to be happy. There are quitters who don't want to do anything. Here's an example. A young man of thirty lived with a girlfriend his age. Both earn $1,000 and rent an apartment. They are young and this is their whole life. She came here and started studying because she felt sad about her life. He refused. A year has passed. She finds a new job and starts earning money, then gets a second higher education and takes care of her appearance. She rushed forward, she had a taste for victory. One victory after another is not easy at all. Then she began to earn five times more than her friend. She tells him: “Why are you sitting on the sofa? Let's act!" Is it possible to live with such a man? She broke up with him. Because this is not life or love, this is a dream. This woman took her life into her own hands. Some people change and some don’t, it’s each person’s choice.
Getting to know yourself is hard work. You have to go against what you are used to, what you have been taught. Figuratively speaking, every day we conquer a little territory from the unconscious. Those who work win. It takes time and effort - and the result is guaranteed. I'm shocked by this myself. The one who acts changes his life.
--What are the basic principles of your system?
- First: all people are different. Each person is unique and inimitable and therefore infinitely valuable. As a psychotherapist, I work to create conditions for a person to discover this within himself. That is, I didn’t nod my head when they say this about people in general, but saw my own uniqueness.
Second: one should not confuse a person with his behavior. We rush to judge the internal qualities of a person by external behavior - and we are mistaken. Let's say a person comes in in terrible condition. If you think that his condition is a portrait of his inner qualities, then no change can happen. But inside each of us is fuller and broader than our behavior. Behavior is a choice that a person makes unconsciously. When people complain to me about their problems, it's not very interesting. If a person has not discovered his inner wealth, does not believe in his happiness, then what will he be like?
Third: every person has unlimited potential for development, transformation, and growth. To me this is not just a theory or a concept. For me this is a fact. If this potential did not exist, how would people change? This is generally the main postulate of any humanistic psychotherapy.
And fourth: barriers and fetters are formed in a person during his lifetime that prevent this potential from being revealed. We are children of existence, but we are born into a society that begins to shape us. And when we grow up, we begin to think that the laws of society are the laws of existence. Two more serious obstacles are family stereotypes and fear.
- How does fear interfere with happiness?
- Fear from a biological point of view is a very correct thing. We have many reactions that save us in case of threat. Run and hide. But if dangerous situations are repeated, our imagination turns on. That is, what is called anxiety appears. This is fear of something unknown, imaginary fear. A person may experience so-called basal anxiety. It could also be social fears - that you will be kicked out of work, that you will do something badly. This anxiety is very strong in a person, it makes us unarmed and stupid. We stop feeling which situation is truly threatening and which is illusory. We begin to fear ourselves.
—You mentioned a family stereotype, which can also be an obstacle to happiness.
- Why do we need a family? Family for happiness or happiness for family? If a person must sacrifice his life, his capabilities, his mind in order to keep this family, then no one needs it. Then this is not a family where people are made, but a place where people are killed. I am against such a family. But if a family is for a person, makes him happy and creates opportunities for his growth, gives a person impetus, then I am for such a family. But the second one is very difficult. Unfortunately, the family is the same system, and very often people become hostages of this system. If only the family survived, and I myself...
- They say that love is evil. Is it possible to find happiness in love?
-- In beatotherapy we use the term “conscious love”. This is the desire for the object of your love to become perfect. So that he reveals his potential, so that he is happy. If the happiness of another person becomes your goal, then it means that you consciously love. Unfortunately, what people call love is usually murder. People want to take something from another for themselves. Because you have nothing. First you need to master the art of love. Everyone thinks that if we are people, then as soon as we are born, we are capable of love. This is a misconception. To love, you need to become a master. A person who is capable of conscious love is a happy person, he is together with being. Therefore, he has something to give to his loved one. And the more he gives, the more he receives. And he will know to whom he is giving, not to everyone he meets.
-- Fine. And the other couple - happiness and sex?
-- There is no victory next to sex. I'm talking about promiscuous sex in which all strength is lost. And for young people this is generally death. Today this is of course an unfashionable point of view. Sex is erotic, intimate. People exchange energies. A powerful explosion occurs. What happens next? How do most people feel the next morning? Tired. For some reason, no one pays attention to this fact. Sex should add strength. Nature has arranged it in such a way that a man and a woman, having united, must increase their energy, this is an explosion, a person must fly! But almost no one flies. Because this is a very difficult task. You need to choose the right partner and time. It is very difficult to have real, harmonious, I would say, soulful sex. In general, everything good is precious, it’s difficult. People don't view their sexual abilities as something precious. So sex basically takes away. Nowadays the prevailing approach to this issue is that having sex is like drinking coffee. But this cannot be! Even to drink coffee - you have to buy it, bring it, take a cup, brew it.
- Is there happiness in money?
- Both the rich and the poor can be happy. Because happiness does not directly depend on money. I believe that human life is beauty, it is victory, and therefore it is happiness. But it is achieved with difficulty. Interviewed by Kirill MIKHAILOV
