Over the past year, more than every tenth stewardess had to stop the harassment from colleagues over the past year, and in every third case it was rough harassment.

Women mentioned such examples of sexual harassment as a manifestation of undesirable attention to their person, receiving obscene proposals from men, feeling their body with men or insulting remarks about their appearance, demonstrating them with sexual materials, as well as threats, blackmail or attempts to perform sexual intercourse contrary to the desire of the stadardess. Women who were subjected to sexual harassment by passengers are almost three times more often than other stewardesses, characterized their health status as bad, showed the results of the survey that were published in the journal Professional and Environmental Medicine (OCCUPARICAL MEDICINAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE).

This survey was conducted among those women who worked or are currently working at Alitalia airline and entered this airline between 1965 and 1995.

According to researchers who worked under the leadership of Terry Balard from the Roman Istituto Superiore di Sanita, they expected that sexual harassment by passengers would cause a health disorder in the stewardesses, and other examples of passengers who come into conflicts with stewardesses also affect this.

The anger and anxiety arising from passengers as a result of a flight delay can provoke passengers to disobedience to stewardesses and even insulting them.

If the stewardess has children, then its stress becomes stronger, the authors of the study say. Three quarters of the stewardesses with children, they believe that during their work it is very difficult to be a good mother.

The excitement about where to attach the child during the work of the mother, sharply increases the level of stress and reduces satisfaction from work. Researchers say that in order to help the stewardess improve their personal and family life, it is extremely important to correctly plan the schedule of its work.

The stewardesses are perceived as "dolls with carts" not overloaded with work, the main requirement for which is a pleasant appearance. But the studies have shown that the voltage experienced by the stewardess at the workplace causes her serious stress. A study previously conducted by the same group of scientists showed that the level of suicides among stewardesses is three times higher than among other people. The age of the stewardesses, which committed suicide, amounted to from 23 to 44 years.

"The influence of conflicts in the family and on work, sexual harassment and low satisfaction from work must be examined deeper for working women of various professions, and not just one sphere of air transportation," the authors of the study wrote in conclusion.
