| Following Basmanny, markets in Otradnoye, Saransk and Kazan collapse Yesterday, in the north-east of the capital, the roof collapsed between two warehouses of the Otradnoe wholesale and retail market. And this is the fourth such emergency in the country over the past two weeks, starting with the tragedy at the Moscow Basmanny market. Fortunately, this time there were no casualties, just like last Thursday, when the roof beam of the Central Market in Saransk burst. But on Friday, one woman was injured during the collapse of a food market in Kazan. And if the collapse of the Basmanny Market, under the rubble of which 66 people died, is to blame, according to the prosecutor’s office, its director, who unauthorizedly carried out the redevelopment of the building, then in the three latest incidents, according to the official version, the snow that accumulated in large quantities on the roofs of shopping centers is to blame.
As Vremya Novostey was told yesterday by the Moscow State Emergency Situations Department, the latest emergency occurred at approximately one o'clock on Sunday on the territory of the Otradnoe wholesale and retail market, located in Signalny Proezd. A metal roof collapsed between two warehouse buildings. “There are a lot of people at the market on a weekend, but, fortunately, no one was injured. Snow and roofing fell on three cars parked under a canopy. The cars were seriously damaged. The cause of the incident was snow accumulated on the roof,” the capital’s Civil Defense and Emergency Situations said.
The roof of the one-story brick Kirov food market in Kazan, according to rescuers, collapsed on Friday at approximately three o'clock in the afternoon. As in previous cases, people first heard a crash. Seeing snow falling from above, they immediately rushed outside. The next moment, part of the roof collapsed. Emergency rescuers rescued the only victim from under the rubble. She turned out to be 45-year-old fruit seller Tatyana Ivanova. With a broken leg and concussion, the woman was sent to the Kazan Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics. According to doctors, the victim's condition is assessed as satisfactory. The reason for the roof falling turned out to be trivial. “A lot of snow has fallen in Kazan over the past few days. The roof, made of a lightweight structure, could not withstand it,” said the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Tatarstan. Alexey IVLEV |
