2007 will become a year of reading in Russia

In Russia, 2007 will be the year of reading. This was the head of the Book Union of Russia, the chairman of the Accounts Chamber Sergei Stepashin reported on Tuesday in Moscow, speaking at the 10th World Russian People’s Cathedral, reports Newsru.com .

The corresponding decision was already adopted by the Russian Book Union.

Russia is included in the first five in terms of the number of books published, Stepashin noted. At the same time, the first places in this indicator, as well as in the number of books read are occupied by China and India.

However, according to the survey conducted in July last year, 37% of Russians do not read books at all, 52% never buy them, and only 23% consider themselves active readers. The results of the survey show that readers prefer detective and love novels to the works of Leo Tolstoy, Pushkin, Dostoevsky and Chekhov.

“By the number of books published, Russia began to rise,” Stepashin emphasized.

The Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy the Second, in turn, informed the participants of the cathedral that an encyclopedia was published in 30 volumes dedicated to Russian soldiers.
