| Yesterday, Kuwaiti women took part in elections for the first time in the country's history. A law granting them equal voting rights with men was adopted in this Persian Gulf state back in May 2005. However, only yesterday residents of the emirate put it into practice - during the by-election of a deputy from the Salmiya district in the Kuwait Municipal Council. Universal suffrage in Kuwait will begin in full force in 2007, when parliamentary elections are held in the country. Women make up 60% of the 28,000 registered voters. In Kuwait, women vote separately from men, but uncover their faces to poll workers for identification purposes. For the first time in Kuwait's history, two women ran for the Municipal Council.
