| Today the Russian public is celebrating the half-century anniversary of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences - IMEMO RAS. In 1956, after the 20th Congress of the CPSU, he became the successor to the Institute of World Economy and World Politics, headed from 1925 to 1948 by the famous academician and economist Evgeniy Varga. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Institute of the USA and Canada, the Institute of the International Labor Movement, the Institute of African Studies, and the Institute of Europe spun off from IMEMO. At IMEMO, the mechanisms of a market economy were developed, the features of foreign political systems, and current problems of the modern world were studied. The research results were sent to the highest Soviet leadership.
Today the institute works closely with presidential and government structures. IMEMO has a staff of 400 people, including three academicians (Nodari Simoniya, Vladlen Martynov, Revold Entov) and eight corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Vladimir Avtonomov, Alexey Arbatov, Vladimir Baranovsky, Oleg Bykov, Alexander Dynkin, Ivan Korolev, Vasily Mikheev, Gennady Chufrin), 79 doctors and 212 candidates of science.
At one time, the institute was headed by such political figures as academicians Nikolai Nikolaevich Inozemtsev, Alexander Nikolaevich Yakovlev, Evgeniy Maksimovich Primakov. Among those who worked at IMEMO were Secretary of the Security Council and former head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Igor Ivanov, diplomat and Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia Vladimir Lukin, State Duma deputies Evgeny Ambartsumov, Alexey Podberezkin, Natalia Narochnitskaya, as well as political scientists Igor Bunin, Viktor Kuvaldin, Georgy Mirsky, Elgiz Pozdnyakov, Nikolai Kosolapov, Grigory Bondarevsky. Not all of them are in service now. But all these names are well known to Vremya Novostei readers from our publications. IMEMO turned out to be a real source of personnel. "TIME FOR NEWS"
