
The Estonian Parliament on Tuesday ratified the Constitutional Treaty of the European Union.
73 deputies voted for the ratification, against 1, there were no abstained. In total, there are 101 deputy in parliament. Even before the vote, all six parliamentary parties said they would vote for ratification.
As the Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet emphasized in his speech, "there is no more favorable for the adoption of the Constitution of the day than today, when the Day of Europe is celebrated." “This is a good agreement for Estonia and Europe. This is the best agreement that was reached during long and difficult negotiations,” the Foreign Minister believes.
At the same time, a picket was held near the parliament building, whose participants called on deputies not to vote for a bill, which, in their opinion, limits the sovereignty and independence of the Estonian state and contradicting the country's constitution, Interfax reports. They transferred the appropriate appeal to the representatives of the parliament.
Estonia became the 15th of the 25 EU countries, which supported the Constitution of the European Union.
Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip considers a ratified agreement an important step from the point of view of the future European Union. Estonia has become a 15th member of the EU, who ratified the contract, the statement that was widespread by the head of government says.
“We know that for the entry of the Constitution, ratification is necessary for 25 members of the community. Therefore, we cannot be sure that the contract will enter into force in the near future,” the Prime Minister noted.
Earlier, Euroconstitution was ratified by Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malt, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Spain.
Residents of France and Holland spoke out against this document in referenda.
The constitutional agreement will enter into force on November 1 of this year if it is approved by all 25 countries of the European Sujuation.
