The Russian language received the status of regional in one city of a millionaire of Ukraine - Dnepropetrovsk. The decision on this was made by deputies at the session of the city council on Wednesday.
For granting the status of the regional language, which most of the inhabitants of the industrial and scientific center considers the native, 77 deputies representing the fractions of the Party of Regions, the Communist Party of Ukraine, the opposition blocs "is not so!" and "folk opposition."
20 deputies from the factions of the Bloc Yulia Tymoshenko and the People’s Union of Our Ukraine party opposed the Russian language, whose activists in the morning of Wednesday picketed the City Council with the intention to prevent the “pagan” issue.
Meanwhile, the prosecutor of the city of Dnepropetrovsk, Nikolai Gornostaev, has already warned the deputies about the illegality of the decision, since, in his opinion, it contradicts the Constitution and the laws of Ukraine. He announced his intention to protest him, RIA Novosti reports.
The mayor of Dnepropetrovsk Ivan Kulichenko also opposed the new status of the Russian language in the city. According to him, "the decision to grant the Russian language to regional status in the city is impossible" due to the lack of a legislative framework in Ukraine to implement such a decision, ITR-TASS reports.
The same arguments are operated by the government and prosecutors who achieve the abolition of decisions on the provision of the Russian language regional status , adopted earlier by the city councils of Kharkov and Sevastopol, as well as the Lugansk and Donetsk regional councils.
It should be noted that last Tuesday in Odessa, a rally of supporters and opponents of the provision of the Russian language of the regional status was held . About 100 representatives of various political forces gathered at the building of the Odessa Regional Council, which was supposed to consider this issue in order to express their consent or, conversely, a protest against the provision of the Russian language of the regional status.
