| In Khabarovsk, 12 TV channels will be turned off until August Residents of Khabarovsk will be left without television broadcasting for almost a month. Yesterday, the city administration announced that from July 10 to August 4, from 9.30 to 18 hours local time, 12 major television channels will be switched off. Among those switched off were Channel One, DVTRC + Dal-TV-Den (TVC) (Channel 5), REN TV + Guberniya, Rossiya + DVTRC, Dal-TV + TV-3, STS + "Guberniya", DTV, "Muz-TV", "Culture", MTV, SET + TNT, "Sport". As a result of this decision, thousands of city residents - mostly housewives and pensioners, who make up the largest daytime television audience - will lose many of their favorite programs. Of course, you could spend your free time from watching TV programs working in your garden or dacha. However, in July in Khabarovsk it is usually very hot, more than 35 degrees, with humidity exceeding 90%, so the weather during the daytime is not conducive to special agricultural activities or excessive stay on the street.
However, Khabarovsk residents will still be able to watch the news or empathize with their favorite TV series characters in the next month, but only early in the morning or during evening prime time. According to Stanislav Kuznetsov, director of the regional center of the Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network, the upcoming shutdown is part of planned work to improve television broadcasting in the city. The regional radio and television broadcasting center on the northern outskirts of Khabarovsk was built in the late 50s of the last century. Since then, its equipment has never undergone major repairs.
When, in addition to central and local state television, dozens of commercial television and radio channels appeared in Khabarovsk, the only antenna tower was literally covered with various kinds of transmitters. The situation has become even more aggravated with the development of cellular and paging communications. As a result, many TV and radio transmitters were forced to locate in the inner area of the antenna. Thick metal supports that block the signal propagation create a radio shadow effect. As a result, a quarter of Khabarovsk blocks located in the “shaded” zone can watch only four television channels, and even then with interference, while the lucky ones living in the direct reception area can catch up to 28 free TV channels on their antenna. Now the television people have decided to eliminate this injustice. In July, they plan to reconstruct the antenna devices of the transmission center and install modern domestic transmitters, which should improve the quality of television broadcasting in the city.
In June last year, repair work was already carried out at the Khabarovsk television transmission center; then it was possible to move some of the transmitters of local radio stations from the television tower to the radio center area. Moreover, this operation did not require a large-scale shutdown of television channels. This year, according to Sergei Bogdanyuk, technical director of the Khabarovsk television company Dal-TV, it was also planned to begin work in June, but because of the World Cup, RTRS management decided to postpone these events until after it.
The regional radio and television broadcasting center is confident that the reconstruction will bring a minimum of inconvenience to the townspeople. After all, shutdowns will be made only on those days when there is good, calm weather outside (this is the main condition for permission to work at height). So, according to television crews, on rainy days, citizens will be able to watch their favorite programs even during the day. In addition, not all federal channels will be switched off from daytime broadcasting. NTV, for example, during the reconstruction will remain the only station broadcasting in Khabarovsk without interruption. This is due to the fact that the transmitter of this television company was initially installed not on the television tower, but on the masts of the radio center. True, due to its location in most districts of Khabarovsk, NTV reception is carried out with great interference, and some residents of the regional capital do not see this TV channel at all.
