| Israel, with its enormous military capabilities, is delivering powerful blows to the Lebanese Hezbollah. But while it may suffer military defeat, Israel has already suffered political defeat, isolating itself in the region. After such large-scale military action, the Israelis will not be able to establish a fruitful peace process with their neighbors. The Middle East peace process is dead.
If Israel sought to weaken or destroy Hezbollah's positions in Lebanon, then why spread the attacks to all of Lebanon? Hit East Beirut and Side? After all, there is no Hezbollah there. Most likely, the Israelis' goal is not Hezbollah at all, but to put pressure on the entire region so that the Arabs can see that Israel can get its way by talking with its neighbors in the language of force. It was a mistake. The Arabs were once again convinced: Israel does not want peace.
Now it will no longer be possible to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1559, adopted in the fall of 2004 and prescribing the disarmament of Hezbollah. This resolution is paralyzed by the fact that Israel wanted to implement it through war. After all, the Lebanese are now showing even greater solidarity with Hezbollah than before. This war changed Lebanon. The changes will affect not only the prospects for the disarmament of Hezbollah and Palestinian organizations in Lebanon, but also the establishment of internal dialogue and the final disposal of Syrian influence.
