The Directorate of the Prosecutor General's Office for the investigation of particularly important cases is headed by Sergei Ivanov, who formerly headed the investigative department of the Main Military Prosecutor's Office, writes the Kommersant newspaper .

The day before, the order for his appointment was signed by acting Prosecutor General Alexander Buksman, since Yuri Chaika went on vacation last Monday.

It was previously reported that after the dismissal of Vladimir Lyseiko three weeks ago, this department of the Prosecutor General’s Office could be headed by Alexander Morin. Until recently, he was the head of the same department of the Ministry of Justice, and until 2002 he worked as the deputy chief military prosecutor of Russia.

According to the publication, Morin’s candidacy was not approved by the presidential administration of the Russian Federation, since they considered that he did not have enough investigative experience; in addition, he was reminded of some “offense” while working in the Main Prosecutor’s Office. Earlier, in anticipation of an appointment to the Prosecutor General's Office, Alexander Morin resigned from the Ministry of Justice.

Sergei Ivanov, who headed the Department of the Prosecutor General's Office for the investigation of especially important cases, came to this structure in the summer of 2006 from the Ministry of Justice along with the current Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika. At his previous place of work, Ivanov was deputy head of the department of legal regulation, analysis and control of the activities of subordinate federal services.

Before that, he worked in the Main Military Prosecutor's Office, where he rose to the rank of colonel. His last position in the Main Military Prosecutor's Office was as head of the investigative department, which dealt with cases of murder, malfeasance by military leaders and hazing.

The military prosecutor's office remembers him as "a strong professional who never got into trouble and never quarreled with his superiors." The newspaper writes that the Directorate of the Prosecutor General's Office for the Investigation of Particularly Important Cases took the decision to appoint Sergei Ivanov positively, calling him more “humane than Lyseiko.”

“He approaches everyone’s work more objectively, respects other people’s opinions, he is ambitious, but lordly manners, like Lyseiko, are not characteristic of him,” noted a source in the management. According to former subordinates, 54-year-old Vladimir Lyseiko tried to retain his post until the last moment. He even intended to talk to President Putin so that he could somehow influence the Prosecutor General. “However, Chaika’s position remained adamant,” noted sources in the prosecutor’s office.

Among the most high-profile cases of recent times, the Prosecutor General's Office, headed by Ivanov, is investigating the murder of the deputy chairman of the Central Bank Andrei Kozlov, and also controls the Three Whales case and several YUKOS cases, including those concerning the company's executive vice president Vasily Aleksanyan, accused of theft and money laundering.
