The legendary ensemble was created by a wonderful violist, an outstanding conductor, a great friend of Dmitri Shostakovich and Svyatoslav Richter, Rudolf Barshai in 1956. The orchestra immediately won the recognition and popularity of the public. D. Shostakovich said: “This is one of the most wonderful ensembles that I have ever heard ... It can be said with confidence that the perfect mastery of this ensemble inspired many Soviet composers to create new compositions.” Dmitry Dmitrievich himself dedicated his Fourteenth Symphony to the orchestra.

After R. Barshai's departure from the USSR, the orchestra was led by I. Bezrodny, V. Tretyakov, A. Korsakov. For the last 15 years, the unique team has been led by Konstantin Orbelyan. Today's biography of the Chamber Orchestra is no less glorious. He performs on the most prestigious concert stages in the world: the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Alter Oper in Frankfurt, the Schauspielhaus in Berlin, the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Salle Pliel in Paris, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Such world celebrities as Rene Fleming, Bella Davidovich, Dmitry Hvorostovsky, Eva Podles, Olga Guryakova, Lyubov Kazarnovskaya, James Galway, Patrick Galois, Nikolai Gedda perform with the orchestra.

The musicians of the orchestra began the celebration of their half-century anniversary with a brilliant concert in the capital - in the Great Hall of the Conservatory, but did not stop there. With the support of Sberbank of Russia, Orbelyan and his musicians went on a big tour of the Russian provinces, where, after the noisy tour of the orchestra with Dmitry Hvorostovsky in 2005, the Chamber Orchestra is a welcome guest. Having started in Tula, the band's tour continued in Smolensk. In the near future, anniversary programs will be heard in St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg. The tour will end on December 12 in Perm. Although the orchestra is a chamber one, its ambitions are great. Stars of Russian and world classical music are invited to participate in the celebration of the anniversary: ​​soprano Marina Meshcheryakova, violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, Italian saxophonist Federico Mondelci, American cellist Zuill Bailey.
