Six Arab countries have announced their intention to begin creating their own nuclear energy, The Times newspaper writes on November 4.

Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia have informed the IAEA of this intention and asked for assistance in this matter.

As one of the employees of the International Atomic Agency said, the interest in nuclear power plants in these countries is explained by the fact that with the help of nuclear power plants, the process of desalination of sea water is significantly simplified and cheaper, and this is critically important for states with vast deserts and arid climates, such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt .

Representatives of the governments of the mentioned countries have already held consultations on the nuclear issue with the IAEA. The agency promised the Arabs technical support for the peaceful development of nuclear energy.

According to experts interviewed by the publication, such a friendly desire of Arab countries to acquire their own nuclear industry is caused by security considerations. The Egyptians, Saudis and others do not want to lag behind Iran, which is successfully developing nuclear energy, and therefore has recently begun to claim the role of leader of the Muslim world.

In addition, the Middle Eastern countries are not satisfied with the current state of affairs, in which Israel remains the only country in the region that has nuclear technology.
