Armenia does not intend to join GUAM, said the Foreign Minister of the Republic

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Vartan Oscanyan stated on Friday that Yerevan "did not consider the possibility of his entry into the GUAM (interstate organization created by Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova), since the ideological base of this organization does not meet" the interests of the republic, ITAR-TASS reports.

Speaking in Yerevan at a press conference, the minister confirmed that, as before, Armenia opposed the initiative of GUAM to discuss the issue of frozen conflicts at the Session of the UN General Assembly.

"The adoption of such a resolution can cause serious harm to the process of resolving the Karabakh conflict, which has recently been proceeding in a constructive channel," the minister said.

According to Oscanyan, in Armenia they find unacceptable attempts to “put in one basket” all the conflicts available in the post -Soviet space. “The intermediaries themselves have repeatedly said that the Karabakh conflict is significantly different from the rest,” the Foreign Minister recalled.

Recall that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia began in 1988. The subject of disagreement was the territory of Nagorno -Karabakh. The Armenians, mainly inhabiting this area, announced their withdrawal from Azerbaijan in accordance with the Law of the USSR. Only in 1992-94, as a result of hostilities, a total of 35 thousand people on both sides were killed. Active hostilities were suspended on May 12, 1994, after signing an agreement on establishing a ceasefire. Thus, the fragile truce in the zone of the Karabakh conflict has been going on for more than 12 years.
