Maestro Valery Gergiev became the main conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra since the New Year. The artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater, People's Artist of Russia replaced Sir Colin Davis, who headed the orchestra since 1995.

The Petersburger, in accordance with the contract, will annually oversee 12 symphonic programs, including the orchestra's performances in the famous Barbican London Cultural Center, as well as perform one world tour. It is possible that he will visit Japan and the USA with the orchestra, ITAR-TASS reports.

The plans with the Londoners will occupy a large place to occupy Russian music, in particular, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Stravinsky. A number of programs are planned to be created in conjunction with the Mariinsky Theater. According to Gergiev, he has long known this strong team of the British capital, which is "very interesting for him."

Cooperation with the Londoners Gergiev will combine with work on contracts at the New York Theater of the Metropolitan Opera and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He has occupied the post of invited conductor of the American theater since 1997, and for 12 years he has been led by the Dutch orchestra, regularly holding music festivals in the Netherlands.
