Putin: The problem of 1937 has been preserved in Russia

Many people in Russia are still unfair prisons, President Putin said at a meeting with members of the Human Rights Council and invited heads of public organizations, ITAR-TASS reports. In this regard, Putin advocated tightening control over the prison system in Russia.

According to the president, "the law on monitoring the activities of the penitentiary system requires special attention from the state and society." At the same time, Putin noted that sympathy in society towards those who are in places of imprisonment are related to the understanding that many people were and are still in prisons unfairly. “This problem has existed since the 37th year,” the president emphasized.

According to the Federal Penitentiary Service, as of January 1, 2007, 87,1700 people were in various correctional institutions of Russia.
