Fire at nursing home kills 62 people

During a fire in a nursing home in the village of Kamyshevatskaya (Yeysk, Krasnodar Territory), 35 people were rescued, of which 30 people were hospitalized, the press service of the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation reported.

Referring to the list of dead nursing home patients, a representative of the Yeisk administration noted that 62 people aged 53 to 95 years died in the fire, 37 of them were women. Among them is a nurse, 58-year-old Lidiya Pechentseva, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while removing patients from the fire during a fire on Tuesday night, said a representative of the administration of the Yeisk district of Kuban.

The fire in the two-story brick building of the nursing home broke out at night at 01:11, was localized at 03:00, and extinguished at 05:00.

66 people and 22 pieces of equipment are involved in clearing the rubble. An investigation team has been created to investigate the causes of the incident.

As reported from the scene, the building is covered with soot and there is no glass. Prosecutor's office employees are working at the scene, filming the scene of the incident.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations employee who worked at the scene, the fire was only on the first floor - people on the second floor died due to heavy smoke. The panels with which the walls were covered emitted toxic gases when burned, he explained.

The head of the Southern Regional Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation, Sergei Kudinov, arrived at the scene of the tragedy and headed the operational headquarters created after the fire.

The building of the nursing home was undergoing renovations until tonight, said one of the employees of the institution. According to him, construction work remained unfinished only in the room where the fire occurred. According to the plan, the repairs were to be completed in two days.

Kudinov confirmed that the fire in the nursing home started in a living room that was being renovated. “The fire broke out in a living room where construction work was taking place and which was not equipped with an alarm system,” he told reporters. A representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations explained that a routine inspection of the building, as a result of which violations in operation were identified, was carried out in January 2006. “Based on its results, two protocols on violations were drawn up, within the framework of which 36 events were ordered to be carried out,” he said. A repeat inspection carried out in December 2006 established the fact of six unfulfilled measures, Kudinov added.
