Spanish cyclist Oscar Freire won the first of four spring classic one-day races of the highest category. He was the first to complete the distance at the longest race Milan-San Remo, 294 kilometers long, included in the Pro Tour calendar.
The three-time world champion from the Dutch Rabobank had to compete at the finish line with such recognized sprinters as the Italian Alessandro Petacchi and the German Erik Zabel, who were accelerated by several of their Milram teammates.
