The US Senate will today begin discussing a draft resolution on Kosovo . The document was introduced by Senators Joseph Lieberman, Joseph Biden, John McCain and Gordon Smith. The authors of the document call on US President George W. Bush to seek the speedy adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution on the status of the Kosovo region. The senators are convinced that this status should consist of “independence under international supervision”, as envisaged by the plan of the UN Secretary General’s special envoy Martti Ahtisaari. The US position in favor of an early decision on Kosovo does not yet enjoy the support of the Security Council. As the results of consultations at the UN Security Council on April 3 showed, the majority of members of this body, including Russia, are in favor of finding a compromise taking into account the interests of both Serbia and the Kosovo Albanians.
