Romania Parliament suspended the powers of the president on suspicion of violation of the Constitution

The powers of President Romania Trian Basesk were suspended on Thursday by parliament for 30 days in connection with suspicions of activities, "contradicting the Constitution."

322 deputies voted for such a decision, 108 and 10 abstained, the speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Bogdan Oltyan said. In the next month, it is planned to prepare a referendum on impeachment to the president.

Before the vote, the head of state stated that in case of such a decision, he would leave his post. "If the parliament, despite the recommendations of the Constitutional Court, will vote for my temporary removal from office, I will leave my post five minutes after the vote," Baseska promised.

Parliamentarians accuse the 55-year-old president of violating the Constitution 19 times, in particular, that he avoided being an intermediary in political disputes, Interfax reports. In addition, the president is suspected that he personally authorized listening to the phones of government members, reports Newsru.ua .

The president insists that he did not violate the Constitution, and therefore the decision to remove him from power is illegal. Before the vote, Baseska promised that in this case he would turn to the electorate, which in the end will determine who should remain - the president or parliament.

Earlier, the Romanian Constitutional Court rejected the appeal of parliamentarians demanding that the president be resigned. The court motivated its decision by the fact that parliamentarians did not provide sufficient evidence of the president of serious violations of constitutional legislation.

However, the leader of the Social Democrats, the largest opposition party, Mircehea Geoan said that such a verdict was carried out under pressure from the bassesu, who, according to him, requested compromising information on some representatives of the Constitutional Court in the special services and blackmail judges.
