Among the authors of the initiative are the names of Vladimir Bukovsky, Elena Bonner and Harry Kasparov. The latter stated on the air of "Echo of Moscow" that the appearance of Anna Politkovskaya Street in New York is an honor for real Russia, "because it is perpetuating the memory of a bright person who did a lot for our country." “When I read the text (petition), I signed it without any hesitation,” Kasparov added.

According to the authors of the initiative, the murder of the Politkovskaya became a symbol of what is happening today with democracy in Russia. The place in New York for renaming was also selected symbolic - next to the building of the Russian consulate.

Similar in the USA has been practiced for a long time. When Andrei Sakharov once declared a hunger strike (and it was in 1984), the city authorities of New York called the corner next to the representative of the USSR by the name of Sakharov and his wife Elena Bonner. But with Politkovskaya, the same thing is not yet possible, the newspaper writes.

The idea of ​​the "Russian Americans" of the authorities, in the jurisdiction of which is the chosen place, is not supported, since they, in principle, against the renaming of any streets.

Recall that a week ago, the mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni said that soon one of the streets of the Italian capital would be named after Anna Politkovskaya.

“In connection with our mission of the city of peace and dialogue, I want to confirm that the administrative procedure has been completed on the initiation of one of Anna Politkovskaya’s streets. A few weeks later, one of the places in Rome will have the name of a Russian woman, a journalist who paid her life for her professional and civilian desire to approve the fullness of democracy in her own country,” Veltroni said.
