Deputies of the Sakhalin Regional Duma at an extraordinary session on Thursday approved Alexander Khoroshavin for the post of governor of the region. 22 parliamentarians were present at the meeting, 20 of them voted in favor, two abstained. The candidacy of Alexander Khoroshavin was submitted to the Duma on August 7 after the early resignation of Ivan Malakhov, the previous head of the Sakhalin region.

On August 7, Vladimir Putin signed the resignation of the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Ivan Malakhov. Just then, the deadline for the president’s response to the Sakhalin governor’s question about trust, which Malakhov put to Putin two weeks ago, was expiring. On the same day, Alexander Khoroshavin, who served as mayor of the city of Okha, was appointed acting head of the region. In addition, Vladimir Putin submitted his candidacy as the new head of the region for consideration by the Sakhalin Regional Duma. Today, before voting in the regional Duma, Alexander Khoroshavin was introduced to the deputies by the presidential envoy to the Far Eastern District, Kamil Iskhakov. He noted such qualities of the candidate as experience, good attitude towards people, presence of a team, modern market thinking.

Ivan Malakhov, in turn, is not going to leave the region and plans to continue working on Sakhalin. “I am not going to leave Sakhalin, I will live and work here. I plan to continue working on the political council of United Russia. On October 21, it will be 30 years since I have lived on Sakhalin,” Malakhov said at a press conference. He said that he was ready to cooperate with the new governor, to transfer all his achievements to him, “spending as much time on it as necessary.”
