Dementieva won the Kremlin Cup tournament

Elena Dementieva won a confident victory over American Serena Williams in the final of the Moscow Kremlin Cup tournament, thus becoming the third Russian winner of the tournament. The Russian tennis player dedicated her victory to the memory of the first President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin. Prior to that, Serena Williams was stronger than Dementieva in all four face-to-face meetings. The last of the fights took place in 2004. The Russian tennis player managed to beat the seventh racket of the world for the first time.

In the final, Dementieva managed to keep the lead throughout all three sets (5:7, 6:1, 6:1). The match lasted about two hours. The beginning was unsuccessful for Elena Dementieva, but she managed to turn the tide of the fight. The Russian tennis player focused on powerful shots on the back line and did not make a mistake in her tactics. In the career of the Russian tennis player, this is the eighth title in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tournaments and the second in the 2007 season. On the way to the final meeting, Dementieva defeated the Swiss tennis player Patti Schnider, and in the semi-finals she defeated the Russian Dinara Safina with a score of 6:1, 6:0. As for Williams, she won over Czech Nicole Vaidishova and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Almost all Russian tennis players participating in the tournament are in the top ten rackets according to the WTA rating. Among them: Anna Chakvetadze, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova. To the surprise of the fans, the first Kremlin Cup was left by Maria Sharapova, losing in her first match to a tennis player from Belarus - Victoria Azarenka. The second racket of the world Svetlana Kuznetsova managed to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.

The Kremlin Cup goes to the Russians for the fourth time in the last five years. Before that, Anastasia Myskina (2003, 2004) and Anna Chakvetadze (2006) were the winners of the "Kremlin" tournament, RIA Novosti reports.
