The European Union introduces a ban on trade, import and export of dogs and cats in all countries of the alliance, as well as goods made from it. This norm is contained in a bill approved on Thursday by the Council of EU ministers.

In June 2007, the project of the relevant EU directive received approval from the European Parliament. The law comes into force on December 31, 2008, the representative of the EU Council press service told RIA Novosti .

According to the new law, sellers of fur products in the EU states are required to provide complete information about what they are made of. The EU directives will charge large fines with violators.

The European Commission that developed the legislative initiative also proposed to the EU countries to create a system for the exchange of information to identify and suppress the practice of trading dog and cat fur.

Often they are sold to clothing manufacturers under the guise of synthetic fur or wild animals, which is used to make warm shoes, gloves and plush toys.

According to Belgian animal protection societies, more than two million cats and dogs are scored annually in Asia in Asia to use their fur for industrial purposes.
