France can provide Irakli district with political asylum

France agreed to consider the case of the former Minister of Defense of Georgia, Irakli Okabashvili, lawyer Eka Beselia told reporters on Tuesday.

"It is possible that Irakli Okabashvili will be changed by a preventive measure from preliminary conclusion to a conditional release during the time of consideration of his case," said Beselia.

She believes that the French side can provide district asylum, Interfax reports.

According to the lawyer, it will take a few more days to resolve a number of formalities.

Okabashvili was detained in Germany on November 27, 2007, on the basis of his announcement on the international wanted list, which made this decision after the appeal of the Prosecutor General of Georgia.

The former Minister of Defense is accused of extorting a bribe, money laundering, and a negligent attitude to official duties.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia opened a criminal case against him after he joined political activity in September 2007 and accused the then President Mikhail Saakashvili of many serious crimes.
