To free up space for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, the authorities evict more than 4 thousand people, the participants in the protest campaign say. According to them, many will receive minor compensation - or will not receive it at all, writes The Sunday Times .

The authorities have already forcibly expelled the population from the territories in which it is planned to build Olympic objects. Fifteen families of refugees from the neighboring Republic of Abkhazia were expelled from the suburbs of Sochi, where they lived for the past 15 years. They have nowhere to go. Local residents fear that a systematic eviction will begin: the Duma has adopted the so -called "Olympic Law", which will lead to the acceleration of the process of confiscation of property. The land allocated to involuntary immigrants, as a rule, is located in remote and unfavorable areas, and payments are incommensurable with the cost of confiscated possessions.

A few minutes from Sochi is Krasnaya Polyana - Putin's favorite mountain resort. Sochi authorities submitted applications for the Winter Olympiads of 1998 and 2002, but they were not satisfied due to doubts about the infrastructure of the Soviet era. To the surprise of many, in the course of the acute struggle for the 2014 Olympics, Salzburg and the South Korean Pyeongchang went around.

Seven months later, difficulties become clear, which is associated with the transformation of Sochi into an Olympic complex. Putin promised that 13 billion dollars of state and private investment would be invested in the games. However, the estimate compiled in the Kremlin did not include the costs of creating some infrastructure elements and a redemption of 600 hectares of land.

The Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of Russia Sergey Stepashin recently warned that the 2014 Olympic Games can cost $ 24 billion, that is, twice as much as indicated in the initial estimate. For comparison: the alleged value of the Winter Olympic Games in Turin 2006 is $ 3 billion, and the 2010 games in Vancouver, according to forecasts, will cost about $ 4 billion.

Putin recently complained: the city sewer system was so dilapidated that the pipes burst every now and then. Electricity interruptions are constantly happening.

Over the next 7 years, about 200 construction projects should be implemented. Among them are not only sports facilities, but also railways, roads and a new airport. The cost of land in Sochi and its environs increased by 500% - they say that now it is the highest prices in Russia.

Skeptics foresee corruption. The commission created on the initiative of Putin to prevent the inappropriate use of funds allocated to the Olympics did not become an obstacle to some local officials. One of them was caught on extortion: he wanted to get 400 thousand dollars from a businessman in exchange for a guarantee that his land would not be confiscated.

“When we learned that Sochi’s application won, we were beside ourselves with joy,” says Andrei Loginov, one of those who threatens eviction. “We thought it would bring the city investment and allow you to create new jobs. Now we understand that only a small group of elected ones will be enriched, and ordinary people like us will remain a broken trough.”
