“The performance is huge, it is difficult to combine it with repertoire activities, almost the entire troupe is involved in rehearsals. Alexander Nikolaevich (Sokurov - “Power” ) prepared a brilliant directorial solution for the play, but the estimated cost of its implementation was $5 million - this is a fantastic budget even for our theater ". This is how the general director of the St. Petersburg Mikhailovsky Theater Vladimir Kekhman explained the reasons for the cancellation of the production of Sergei Taneyev's opera "Oresteia", on which Alexander Sokurov had been working in recent months. The director himself connects the unexpected cancellation of his production with the fact that he signed an open letter criticizing the urban planning policy of the St. Petersburg administration (see "Power" No. 19). Moreover, unlike the honorary citizens of St. Petersburg, who withdrew their signatures on the letter, Alexander Sokurov gave a harsh interview to the Ekho Moskvy radio station, in which he once again confirmed that he considers the destruction of the city’s architectural ensemble unacceptable. Meanwhile, Vladimir Kekhman insists that the reasons for refusing to stage the Oresteia are purely economic and have nothing to do with politics.
