
The University of Carnegie-Mellon in the United States announced the creation of a computer technique to determine where this or that photo was taken, reports Washington Profile .
The principle of determining the place of photo shoot is quite simple: the computer program analyzes the picture to determine the features of the landscape. After that, the original image is compared with millions of photographs with "binding" to geographical coordinates. Moreover, in the search process, for example, the style of people's clothing or species of plants captured in the picture is not analyzed. The emphasis is on the composition of the photograph and its color scheme.
At this stage, the program can set the place for photography with an accuracy of 16%. However, the authors of the invention indicate that even when the search algorithm does not work, it is able to name several possible options from which an operator-man can make a choice.
This program successfully "finds" on the map of photographs that depict the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral or Barcelona Street. At the same time, the most famous symbol of the capital of France - the Eiffel Tower - is not so good to identify: the program confuses it with other architectural objects. The reason for this is that the program is not "trained" to identify specific attractions.
