Apple managed to sell 1 million iPhone 3G communicators over the weekend. Sales began on July 11, Friday, recalls the Vedomosti newspaper.
On the first day of sales, people stood in queues for hours, from which many left disappointed. Unlike the first-generation iPhone, the iPhone 3G, when sold in the United States, requires activation and signing a contract with the operator in the store. Apple's servers could not cope with the load, and the activation process in stores was greatly delayed. Due to glitches in the program, Apple suggested that customers activate their phones themselves at a later time.
Simultaneously with the launch of the iPhone 3G, a new version of the firmware was released, which could be downloaded by owners of the previous generation device. However, due to a server failure, many iPhone owners were unable to do this, and some discovered that after trying to update the firmware, the phone stopped working altogether.
Despite all the glitches, Apple announced that it managed to sell 1 million phones over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A year ago at the end of June, Apple sold 270,000 iPhones on its debut weekend, and it took 74 days to sell 1 million phones.
By the end of the year, the new iPhone 3G will be available in more than 70 countries. So far, Russia is not on this list. Previously, Jobs said that he had not yet reached an agreement with the operators of these countries, but promised to definitely find partners in them by the end of 2008.
