Drunk drivers will be punished more strictly

The Russian government has adopted a bill tightening the punishment for drunk drivers, reports Echo of Moscow. The document is approved by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Corresponding amendments to the Criminal Code are planned to be introduced to the State Duma to the autumn session.

According to the new rules, being driving in a state of intoxication will be considered an aggravating circumstance of a crime. The punishment for drunken motorists who provoked an accident will be more severe than for the rest: if one person died, the term of imprisonment will be from five to seven years, unlike three to five for the rest of the motorists. If, by the fault of a drunken driver, two people will die or more, he can receive a prison term of five to nine years instead of his previous punishment of five to seven years in prison.

"I believe that this decision has long come off!" - said Vladimir Putin at a meeting of the Presidium of the Government. He brought data on traffic accidents in Russia in one day-July 20. According to the prime minister, 707 road accidents were recorded, in which 122 people were killed, including five children, and 924 people were injured, of which 84 were children.
