In his castle, the action of the opera of Bel Bartok develops, which has become one of the main events of the Salzburg festival. The festival will last another week, but its main results are obvious now
Bartok wanted to write a national work, but the eternal drama of the relationship was obtained, where the shadows of the past run on the faces of lovers, and literally - skeletons in the closet are hidden behind the doors. The director Johan Simonsu could only do the scammers - and they are remembered at first glance. Judit (her party sings Michelle de Jung) turns out to be a nurse, and the Duke (Falk Shtrukman) - a cripple in a wheelchair. The artist Daniel Richter radically solved the problem of a huge, 40 meters long, scene of a large festgpilhaus: in its entire horizon, he launched the roots and a crown of black and white wood. Moreover, when necessary, he does not spare colors. In the same cantata about deer, Richter built the scenery in a new colorful coloring. Since all three parts of the evenings are merged into a single whole, they go without intermissions and pauses, it turned out that the gloomy atmosphere of the castle, where the walls are bleeding, grows from the sunny-festive atmosphere of the outside world.
Bartok turned out to be one of the heroes of the festival. His works were also performed by the Cleveland Orchestra, who came to the shores of Zalzhah under the leadership of Franz Velzer-Mest. Since next year, this is as professional as the balanced conductor from Zurich will become one of the main characters of Salzburg. Perhaps he will be able to squeeze Riccardo Muti, who played more than others this year.
New listeners
The only thing all the operas came together is the success of a “deadly flower”. True, such an opera was not even in terms of the festival, it was hidden inside the program “Continent Sharino”. Since last year, it was decided to give a whole series of concerts to an outstanding author of our time. This year it was the turn of the 61-year-old Sicilian self-taught Salvatore Sharino (he did not end the conservatory, although he writes music from the age of 12). Not only chamber works fell into a series of his evenings, but also the opera and the puppet performance “The Beautiful and Terrible History of the Princes of Venoza and the Beautiful Mary”.
Both the opera and the performance are connected by the figure of one character - the Italian aristocrat and composer Carlo Jezualdo. He became famous not only as the author of amazing vocal music, but also as a killer of his own wife and her lover (it happened in 1590). Moreover, he began to compose almost the day after he stained his hands with blood. There was no punishment, because there was no one to pronounce the sentence to such a high -blessed criminal. So I began to compose.
On the example of Sharino, it is clear how to update festival blood, without resorting to criminal methods. There are a lot of interviews with the composer, and a whole series of reports dedicated to his work, not to mention the huge accompanying program for children. Someday, the current public, who still remembers Karayan and is still largely devoted to his old-month aesthetic principles, will come new listeners. There is an excellent music university in Salzburg, advanced music lovers from all over the world come here - well, they are only a mozart to treat them? “Continents” are designed to open a new one, just like in the dramatic program this function is performed by the Young Directors Project project.
Russian virtuosos
The work of young directors in Salzburg has been shown for a long time. The plot itself flies like a bird. But Tore Wagn Lid is so fascinated by Brecht, the traditions of his theater, which sometimes admits the slowdown of rhythm, unthinkable in the age of clip consciousness, tries to conduct a direct dialogue with the viewer. Well, where, tell me, to take a politically engaged audience in today's Salzburg? Is it that the intensible of the festival of Jurgen Flimm, who is a couple of poems by Guantanamo's prisoners with the great Vanessa Redgrav?
