Tired of winning

Russian Dinara Safina followed her compatriot Elena Dementieva into the quarterfinals of the US Open, repeating her success at this Grand Slam tournament, dated two years earlier. In the third round, Safina beat German Anna-Lena Groenefeld - 7:5, 6:0.

The current match with the tennis player from Germany caused great concern among fans of Safina’s talent. The fact is that after the previous match with the Swiss Timea Baschinski, the Russian woman did not hide the fact that she felt tired. The tension was felt after her recent performance at the Olympic Games in Beijing, where Safina became second.

But her current rival Anna-Lena Groenefeld, although she was gaining shape during this championship, was nevertheless far from the state in which she was a couple of years ago, when she was among the second ten tennis players in the world ranking. Recently, the German woman has been hampered by injuries and problems with her coach, and therefore in the match with Safina the real fight began only in the first set. After losing the first game, Groenefeld's game went wrong, and her signature technique - a strong first serve - faded into the background. As a result, in the second set, the opponent did not find any arguments against Dinara and did not win a single game.

After the match, Safina again stated that she was exhausted from previous matches and tournaments and therefore was not able to demonstrate her best tennis, that she was glad that the match was fleeting and now she has one day of rest, during which she will try to recover and get ready for the fight .

Safina's next opponent will be Italian Flavia Pennetta, who beat Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo. By the way, it was Mauresmo who two years ago in New York became Safina’s “offender,” blocking her path to the semifinals. This time, our rivals view our tennis player, who is having a brilliant season, in a completely different way. The same Pennetta, before the confrontation with Safina, said that she was simply happy that she had made it to the quarterfinals. In her opinion, the game with the Russian will be very difficult, since Safina is an excellent tennis player and is in good shape. “To win, I need to show everything I’m capable of and give it my all,” said the Italian.
