“Step Brothers” (USA, 2008, Adam McKay). A hilarious comedy from the new god of American comedy, producer Judd Apatow (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Superbad,” “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan”). Two overgrown infantile momma-daddy sons (Will Ferrell - "Ricky Obby, King of the Road", "Old School", "Anchorman" and John C. Reilly - "The Dewey Cox Story", "Boogie Nights", " Crime") are forced to become stepbrothers in their fifties after their excessively young parents decided to tie the knot. And these beauties have barely enough brains for one hemisphere... The film, nevertheless, is not only the most amusing, but also, as always with Apatov, very intelligent. Also starring Mary Stringburgen, Richard Jenkins, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, Andrea Savage, Lurie Poston and Ken Jeong.
“Bangkok Dangerous” (USA, 2008, Oxide and Danny Pang). An auto remake of the film by the Thai prodigies the Pang brothers (“Eye”, “Eye-2”, “Messengers”), which brought them international fame in their time. However, there is little left from the original here: the name and the main occupation of the main character (Nicolas Cage - “City of Angels”, “The Family Man”, “The Wicker Man”) - he is a hired killer. The thing is that in the first “Bangkok” the killer was deaf and mute, but Cage’s character named Joe both hears and speaks perfectly. But among the minor characters there are people with hearing and voice disabilities. Otherwise, a colorful, but somewhat old-fashioned adaptation of the basic techniques of oriental combat cinema for audiences around the world. Also starring Sean Delaney, Panward Hemmani, Dom Khetrakul, Philip Whaley, Shahkrit Yamnarm, Charlie Yeung and James Wise.
“On the edge of paradise” (Germany - Türkiye - Italy, 2007, Fatih Akin). A new film by one of the most talented modern directors - the German Turk Akin (“In July”, “Solino”, “Head on the Wall”). Nejat (Baki Davrak - "Dealer", "Planet Alex", "Wolf River") goes to Istanbul from Germany in search of the daughter of her father's deceased friend, who turns out to be a radical lesbian and political activist (Nurgul Yesilcay - superstar of Turkish commercial cinema) ... A philosophical view of the social and political situation in modern Turkey. The film participated in the Cannes competition and received a prize for best screenplay, and also became the winner of a dozen more awards and prizes. Also starring Hanna Schygula, Tuncel Kurptitz, Patricia Ziolkowska, Nursel Kose, Lars Rudolf and Andreas Thiel. Only in Horizon and Formula Kino Europe.
“SSD” (Russia, 2008, Vadim Shmelev). SSD is an acronym that stands for “death to Soviet children,” which came from children's folklore and menacingly adorned the license plate of a car from which there is no escape. In the new film by Vadim Shmelev (“Apocalypse Code”), this and other horror stories of that time (like red cookies, a black hand and other coffins on wheels) to the music of Ilya Lagutenko come to life in the space of a reality show, which is held in an abandoned pioneer camp. Ten participants of different sexes and an ambitious presenter (Anfisa Chekhova) find themselves the objects of close attention of a murderous maniac, who could be anyone. Also starring Evgenia Khirivskaya, Stanislav Erdley, Artem Mazunov, Alexander Makogon, Ekaterina Nosik and Ivan Nikolaev.
“Game Big” (USA, 2008, Joshua Seftel). A black satire (in the original film called "War, Inc.") on modern American mores in the field of foreign policy and domestic economics. An assassin (John Cusack - "Intuition", "Adaptation", "Identification") receives a task to eliminate an oil tycoon in the Middle Eastern country of Turakistan, where the former US Vice President and now financial tycoon (Dan Aykrod - " Ghostbusters", "Pearl Harbor", "Evolution"). To cover up, the killer undertakes to produce a super show dedicated to the wedding of local celebrities, but the further it goes, the more “foreign and foreign” everything becomes... To get real pleasure from this strange opus, you need to be on topic as much as possible, but in any case it’s worth watching - - the acting ensemble is too luxurious. Also starring Joan Cusack, Maurice Tomei, Hillary Duff, Ben Kingsley, Mick Harvey and Nike Bellamy.
“The Naked Drummer” (USA, 2008, Peter Cattaneo). A musical comedy in the spirit of “School of Rock” about the drummer of the heavy metal band “Vesuvius” Bob Fishman (Rainn Wilson - “Sahara”, “My Super Ex-Girlfriend”, “Juno”), who crashed out of the team that he once organized, and forced two decades later to show his holy love for music as part of his nephew’s school ensemble. Also starring Christina Applegate, Teddy Geiger, John Gad, Emma Stone, Jeff Garlin, Jane Lynch and Jason Sudekis.
