Our volleyball players will fly to Cuba againThe International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has approved the composition of the World League participants for the 2009 season. The biggest commercial competition for men's national teams will once again feature 16 teams. There are two changes compared to last season. Instead of Spain and Egypt, Argentina and Holland will play in the tournament.
The FIVB has already divided the teams into four quartets of the intercontinental round. According to the tradition of recent years, this is done in such a way that the strongest volleyball players on the planet make as many long trips as possible within a short period of time. So, in three groups, European teams will have to fly to both America and Asia.
Here is the composition of the 2009 World League groups: “A” - USA, Italy, China, Holland; “B” - Serbia, France, Korea, Argentina; “C” - Russia, Bulgaria, Japan, Cuba; "D" -- Brazil, Poland, Finland, Venezuela. The Russian team will go to Freedom Island for the second year in a row. The preliminary stage matches will take place from June 12 to July 19, the final round with the participation of six teams will be July 22-26. The FIVB so far names the USA, Serbia and China among the contenders for hosting the decisive stage.
Russian walkers intend to go to court
Russian race walking masters Vladimir Kanaykin, Alexey Voevodin, Viktor Buraev, Igor Erokhin and Sergey Morozov, disqualified for using prohibited drugs, intend to challenge this decision of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) in court.
This was stated by one of the punished athletes - Kanaikin. Let us recall that erythropoietin (EPO) was detected in all biosamples taken from these athletes during the out-of-competition period. On September 9, a meeting of the Arbitration Anti-Doping Commission and the Bureau of the RusAF Presidium took place in Moscow. The athletes' coach, Viktor Chegin, was present. In accordance with anti-doping regulations, the walkers were disqualified for two years starting September 9, 2008. A copy of the decision was sent to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), where they have already confirmed its receipt.
Former world record holder in 20 km walking, world champion among juniors, 23-year-old Vladimir Kanaykin, categorically disagrees with this formulation of the issue. The athlete cannot explain how the prohibited drug ended up in his samples and denies that he took anything during training. Kanaykin also added that if ARAF’s decision on disqualification remains unchanged, he, no matter what, intends to continue preparing for the 2012 Olympics.
Meanwhile, one of the main rivals of the Russian walkers, 36-year-old Ecuadorian Jefferson Perez, officially announced his retirement from his sports career. “I would like to continue my career, but my body does not allow it. In our country they say: “If you are famous, you can retire.” But I’m not that breed of people,” Perez noted. “I’m going to start working with children, and also participate in various projects.” Let us remind you that at the last Olympics Perez won silver, losing the gold medal to Russian Valery Borchin at a distance of 20 km.
Bolt looked at Lebedeva's jumps
Athens Olympic champion in the long jump, two-time silver medalist of the 2008 Games, Russian Tatyana Lebedeva, won the annual track and field tournament in the Japanese city of Kawasaki.
In the long jump sector, the Russian woman took the lead after her second attempt and left no chance for her rivals, winning with a score of 6 m 81 cm. The second prize-winner of the competition was Japanese Kumiko Ikeda (6.45). The 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the heptathlon was completed by American Hileas Fountain (6.23).
The guest of honor of the tournament was multiple Olympic champion and world record holder in the 100 and 200 m running Usain Bolt from Jamaica.
General Shamanov headed the Taekwondo Federation
At the reporting and election conference of the Russian Taekwondo Union, which took place in Ulyanovsk, a new president was elected. He became the former governor of the Ulyanovsk region, now the head of the Main Directorate of Combat Training and Troop Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Hero of Russia, Lieutenant General Vladimir Shamanov.
Initially, three candidates applied for the post of head of the STR - the current president Evgeny Klyuchnikov, Shamanov and Vladimir Gruzdev. After Klyuchnikov and Gruzdev withdrew their candidacies, Shamanov was elected president of the STR by a majority vote.
New youth league record
While the teams of Division “A” of the men’s basketball super league are carrying out the last stage of preparation for the Russian Championship, which starts on October 10, the composition of the participants and the formula of the championship of the nearest reserve – the Children’s and Youth Basketball League (JBL) – have become known.
In the new season, a record number of teams - 29 - will start in the tournament, which unites the strongest young players in the country. It is noteworthy that these included not only reservists from clubs in the “A” and “B” divisions of the Super League, but also three farm teams of the Major League - - from Kazan, Novokuibyshevsk and Chekhov. At the first stage of the championship, starting in early November, the participants will be divided into six groups and will play each other in two rounds. The fight at the second stage will be continued by the 14 strongest participants, then six contenders for medals will be determined. The final tournament will take place in April, and, like last year, the decisive stage will be held according to a playoff system that is attractive to fans.
The upcoming DUBL season will be the eighth in history. Over the years of its existence, the league, held by the Russian Basketball Federation with the support of the general sponsor of the tournament, JSC Lebedyansky, has revealed to the public dozens of names who today play in super league clubs, as well as for the country’s national team. Suffice it to say that among the DYBL graduates there are such famous players as 2007 European champions Anton Ponkrashov and Nikita Shabalkin, as well as participants in the Beijing Olympics Vitaly Fridzon and Andrei Vorontsevich.
