UN Secretary General and President of Egypt discussed the settlement of the situation in the gas sector

The issues of implementing the peaceful initiative of Egypt to resolve the situation in the GAZ sector were the focus of the negotiations held here on Wednesday between President Hosni Mubarak and the UN Secretary General Pan Gi Muna. From Egypt, the administrative head of the international community began his tour in the Middle East. During it, he will also visit Jordan, Israel, the western bank of the Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait, as well as Turkey.

The peaceful initiative proposed by Egypt provides for a ceasefire for a certain time in order to reach an agreement on a constant ceasefire, the opening of all border guards for the delivery of humanitarian aid to residents of the coastal enclave, for which the Palestinian national administration must be taken under their control part of them, as well as the placement of observers of the European Union there. The last paragraph of the plan provides for inter-Palatic reconciliation and, as a result, the formation of the Government of National Unity to solve all the problems of the Palestinian Society, ITAR-TASS reports.

On the eve of the visit to the region, Pan Hi Moon said he was not going to meet with the leaders of Hamas. "I will have meetings with an international recognized Palestinian leader - the head of the Palestinian National Administration Mahmoud Abbas," he said.

The Hamas movement should immediately stop the missile shelling "of the territory of Israel, Pan Hi Moon emphasized. “Hamas leaders” should think about the future of the Palestinian people, ”said the UN Secretary General.

Earlier, representatives of this group said that they would agree to a truce only if its conditions are assumed to end shelling, a complete conclusion from the Gaza of Israeli troops and the opening of border crossings.

At the same time, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs talks about the lack of guarantees that Hamas will respect any peace agreement.

The Israeli authorities report that during the day more than 100 targets were subjected to shelling in the gas sector, including 55 tunnels, which Hamas used for smuggling weapons and ammunition from Egypt. Despite the actions of Israel, Palestinian militants continue the shelling of Israeli territory. According to the Israelis, 25 grenade launchers and missile strikes were inflicted on Tuesday in the southern cities of Gaza.

Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak noted that his country is seeking to terminate shelling and smuggling of weapons in Gas from the territory of Egypt. “We are trying to achieve these two goals, at the same time not forgetting about diplomatic initiatives,” said Barak.

According to experts, Israel is still refraining from full -scale operations in the city’s city quarters, since street battles can bring a large number of victims on both sides. And such a development of events would be extremely risky for the Israeli cabinet on the eve of the parliamentary elections.
