Rocket fire continues in southern Israel. On January 16, 24 rockets and 7 mortar shells were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip. There were no casualties, a building in the center of Sderot and one of the kibbutz buildings in the Eshkol area were damaged. During Operation Cast Lead, 13 Israelis were killed, ten of them military personnel.

The death toll for today is about 60 people, taking into account the bodies that were found during the analysis of the ruins. The total death toll is 1170 Palestinians, more than 5.2 thousand injured.

United Nations General Assembly

Recognizes that more than 1,100 Palestinians have died, rocket attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip do not stop. The Assembly is "deeply concerned that Israel is violating Security Council resolution 1860 of 8 January 2009."

Amnesty International

"At least 900 Palestinians were killed, of which more than a third were civilians, including about 200 children." There is information that in the near future several large shipments of weapons from the United States will be delivered to Israel by sea, including those containing extremely combustible white phosphorus. Amnesty International names 17 countries that supply weapons to Israel and demands that the UN Security Council impose an emergency comprehensive arms embargo.

Human Rights Watch

Points out the use of white phosphorus in Gaza, but acknowledges that phosphorus can be used legally to create a smoke screen.

The International Red Cross has expressed concern that Israel is using phosphorus bombs in the Gaza Strip. However, the IWC notes that there is no evidence that phosphorus bombs are being used by the Israeli army in violation of international conventions or to target civilian targets.
