The new US President Barack Obama can come to Moscow in April, and the new Secretary of State of America Hillary Clinton can visit the capital in March. This was reported on January 22 by the Kommersant newspaper with reference to a source close to the US State Department.
According to the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs of Senator-Democrat John Kerry, new opportunities are “opening up new opportunities” for a dialogue with Russia to reduce weapons. Washington will also have a new opportunity to understand the position of Moscow on issues such as the pro and the expansion of NATO.
“I am firmly sure that during this year we have the opportunity to negotiate and conclude an agreement with Russia, in which we will reduce the number of warheads to one thousand, which will be the lowest level for all the time,” RIA Novosti quotes the words of Kerry.
The new US administration has already decided to reduce the costs of the missile defense program. According to Clinton herself, one of the main priorities of Washington will also be the development of a new agreement, which should replace START-1. Another topic that has to be discussed with Moscow will be the problem of energy security.
The day before, Clinton stated that the new US administration was ready to constructively cooperate with Russia. “President Obama and I strive for future interaction with the Russian government in the spirit of cooperation on strategic importance,” Clinton emphasized.
According to the source of the newspaper Kommersant from the State Department, in the spring Obama will go to his first European tour. On April 2, he will visit London, where he will take part in the G20 summit and will first meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Then Barack Obama will go to the anniversary Summit of NATO dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Alliance. This event is scheduled for April 3-4 and will be held on the border of France and Germany - in the cities of Strasbourg and Kile. From there, Barack Obama, as suggested in the State Department, can fly to Moscow. The source recalls that in the same way last year after the NATO summit in Bucharest, former US President George Bush went to Sochi.
In the administration of the President of Russia, he said that the visit of Barack Obama was not agreed, no official proposals were received to organize a meeting. At the same time, the department confirmed that the first confrontation of Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama will be held in April - at the Twentieth Summit. However, if the US President is going to come to Moscow, this will remove the need to hold a bilateral meeting in London, sources indicate.
The possible visit of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton can also be dedicated to the first European tour. Martha has a meeting of the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of countries - members of the North Atlantic Alliance. The State Department believes that all of February the new Secretary of State will continue to form his team.
The Russian Foreign Ministry declares that today no specific dates of the visit of Hillary Clinton have yet been agreed.
