American scientists managed to solve the riddle of Antarctica. According to previous data, it seemed that the temperature on the continent decreases against the background of universal global warming. Now it is proven that this is not so, reports the website inopressa.ru with reference to The Guardian .
According to the British newspaper, referring to the publication of Professor Eric Steig from Washington University in Nature magazine, the new climatic measurements conducted in the inaccessible Western Antarctic showed that since 1957, the temperature there increased by 0.17 degrees Celsius. Thus, the average of the mainland amounted to about 0.12 degrees Celsius, which in general coincides with the numbers in the southern hemisphere.
As Professor Steig explains, it was fundamentally important to resolve this contradiction, since skeptics and opponents of the concept of global warming actively applied this example to prove the failure of all the requirements of environmentalists.
Climatologists, in turn, are already in alarm: the proven sharp warming in Antarctica can threaten an increase in sea level by one to two meters over the next hundred years, the newspaper writes.
