In Moscow, Stanislav Markelov was buried - a lawyer and human rights activist, a villainous killed in broad daylight on the metropolitan street (
Vasily Syzganov , lawyer:
Immediately a song of the old Soviet song about Gagarin comes to mind - "You know how the guy he was." Here everything can be said about Stas. Absolutely fearless and even reckless to some extent. We have a difference in the age of nine years, and there were moments that I could not understand in it, including this reckless fearlessness. And yet - you can’t call youth and maximalism, he just had such principles in life that if he took up something, he brought this matter to the end.
He perceived all these threats, but tried not to pay attention to them. Not just a lawyer, but a human rights activist. He took up such things where no one would help except him. In addition to him, people in our profession are absolutely fearless, but what he was taken for is unlikely to pull anyone else. Someone stopped fear for his life, for his family, someone-a material issue. Nothing stopped him.
Lev Ponomarev , Executive Director of the Movement "For Human Rights":
His workplace was here, in our office. He was a lawyer, but stood out in this environment, because he was also a public figure. There are few of them - well, Karinna Moskalenko, maybe he. It is no coincidence that he established the public organization "The Institute of the Supreme Law" and united lawyers around him, mainly from the regions.
The definition of the "lawyer lawyer" fully corresponds to him. He communicated very little with anyone in the lawyer environment, he was the closest to him the left environment, the people of left convictions, the anarchist movement was very close to him, he himself in his youth, ten years ago, was inside this movement. It is no coincidence that he defended the anti -fascists.
Despite his youth, he was, one might say, a monopolist in some areas, and in areas very dangerous. A striking thing. A monopolist in defense against the Nazis: any incident associated with the murder of an anti -fascist, with an attempt on him, was immediately addressed to him. It so happened that he refused, he had a lot of things to do, but the first call was always to him.
The second area where he was a monopolist is Chechnya. From Moscow lawyers, he visited one there, in my opinion. At least in 2001-2002, when it was very dangerous, only he went there. He defended the victims of our military and special services, defended those who suffered from the Kadyrovites - and this is doubly dangerous, I would say.
Despite this risky activity, he was not an exalted person. He was aware of danger, but somehow very calmly treated this, as if he did not notice. He often joked, but at the same time he was very focused during his work. We have many young employees here, to whom he helped when they turned to him - so they were drawn to him.
Lyudmila Alekseeva , Chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group:
I knew him for ten years - he came to me when, probably, he had just received a lawyer status. He came in the case, which he took from the election of the President of Bashkiria. Murtaza Rakhimov did not give access to the media any of the competitors. The director of the radio station was arrested, which provided the air for competitors of Rakhimov. Stanislav undertook to conduct this business and came to me for help. We decided to go together to the Commissioner for Human Rights Oleg Mironov, but he, under some pretext, refused to participate in this matter. In the end, this director managed to release a recognizance not to leave, and he went abroad. This was the first thing that I met with Stanislav. Then he often turned to various matters.
If Stanislav had not been a lawyer, he would still be so socially active. He was very close to human rights activists. As a lawyer, he led some kind of economic affairs, but he was drawn all the time in this direction, although we must say that customers are not very profitable. He led many affairs for free or for an insignificant fee, simply because he was interested. Although he was very young, he won a large number of things. He worked a lot in Chechnya, almost everyone knows him there.
There are not so much lawyers who take the command of the heart for such commercially unprofitable cases. And Stas was not only taken for such matters at someone’s request - he himself came and said: let me do this business. In particular, he thus began to conduct a case in Blagoveshchensk, when a whole city was beaten there four years ago. Human rights activists raised the noise, and the head of the city police was removed from office. He was not arrested, but ordinary police officers were put on trial. Here Stas undertook to conduct this business. He was very patient and if he took up business, he brought him to the end. He had to fly to Blagoveshchensk many times, but getting there for a long time and difficult, there are no decent hotels there, there is nothing, and he is a vegetarian, it was not so easy for him to eat in public places. Nevertheless, he brought this matter to the end, although I suspect that he was fine if it was enough to pay for the road.
Not so long ago, he came with the idea of organizing the Silver Kalosha Award - such a humorous reward to the judge, who made the most illegal and absurd decision or passed the same sentence. He already opened this site himself, he was very passionate about this project.
And at the beginning of the year, the father of Elsa Kungaeva called me and said that he wanted Stas to file a cassation against the court’s decision on the early release of Budanov. At the same time, Visa Kungaev said that they threaten Stas and that if it is dangerous for him, then maybe you should not do it. But Stas said that he was threatened all the time and that he no longer pays attention to it. We are all threatened, so I also thought that this was not very serious, but you see, it was not an empty threat.
Alexander Cherkasov , member of the board of the Memorial society:
We met him in the early nineties in such a left youth company - after 1991, protest movements could be primarily left. Stanislav was one of this company. At the very beginning of October 1993, when it became clear that it would be bad, they remembered something Maximilian Voloshin in the Civil War and decided to create a Sarlot. Unfortunately, on October 3 and 4, this Sarla was a job. Many memorials were then on the streets of Moscow for the same reasons. From that time we have known each other.
Then there were a lot of this youth, the question is what happened to them next. If we look at the left perestroika period, we can find a variety of fate of people who, to put it mildly, have not found a place for themselves. Or vice versa. Who, for example, will think that Andrei Isaev, the author of the idea of the holiday on November 4, the famous unicorn, once was in one of the first anarchist organizations? So is it really possible only two ways - either the betrayal of ideals, or marginalization?
But Markelov learned and became a lawyer. As they say, he threw off his tail. Indeed, the "horse tail" that he wore, shake and became a lawyer in a jacket. He won many things against the anarchists: in the cases that he led, it was not possible to fabricate anything. Those deeds that he led in Chechnya are significant affairs: Budanova and the “cadet” of Lapina. The trial of Lapin took place in Grozny, and the Russian lawyer, who was in Grozny in defense of the injured Chechens, was an even more amazing picture for local residents than a flying saucer with the Martians. In fact, Stanislav, being a representative of the victims, saved the honor of Russia. He managed to put Lapin legally cleanly, he was able to achieve the exclusion from the case of evidence received completely illegally. The law, not revenge, is a sample of a lawyer’s behavior in this process.
He also conducted environmental affairs - for example, Mikhail Beketov. He represented the victim in the case related to the attack of the Nazis on the anti -fascists in Moscow. He represented the interests of independent trade unions in the regions. If you look at the spectrum of the affairs that he led is typical of just for a person of left -wing views. We see a person who managed to realize the ideals of his youth in his successful lawyer practice. He showed that it was possible not to betray these ideals and not become a marginal. In many of these cases, he was in danger - even now we cannot say where the bullet came from. This is an example of a person who was faithful to his ideals.
