| The winner of Milan - San Remo was determined by a photo finish
To identify the fastest in the longest (298 km) road cycling one-day race on the international calendar, Milan - San Remo, held for the hundredth time, a photo finish was required. The Briton Mark Cavendish from the team (Columbia Team - Highroad) was only a quarter of a wheel ahead of the German Heinrich Haussler, representing Cervelo.
On the last kilometer of the distance, Haussler made a powerful push and broke away from his pursuers by a good ten meters. However, Cavendish made a crazy dash and was able to get ahead of the German cyclist right at the finish line. The third prize-winner of the race was Haussler's teammate, Norwegian Tom Hushovd. Actually, based on team tactics, the German had to accelerate the Scandinavian, since he is a recognized sprinter, but at some point Haussler felt that he himself was capable of winning. Nevertheless, Cavendish still celebrated success, who this season had already won stages at the Tour of Qatar, the Tour of California and the Italian Tirreno-Adriatico stage race. Thus, in 2009, Cavendish already has six victories.
If we talk about other famous sprinters, the Italian Alessandro Petacchi was fifth at the finish of the classic race Milan - San Remo, which lasted almost 7 hours, his compatriot Daniele Bennati was sixth. Belgian one-day master Tom Boonen is 15th, Filippo Pozzato from the Russian Katyusha is 22nd. Seven-time Tour de France champion American Lance Armstrong (Astana) did not set any serious goals for this start and was ultimately classified in 125th place.
Bjoerndalen won two races in a row
Last weekend in Trondheim, Norway, the program of the penultimate, 8th stage of the World Cup included the most spectacular personal races - pursuit and mass start. The winner of Thursday's sprint, Olga Zaitseva, came second in the pursit, having made a fatal misfire while trying to hit the fifth target in the fourth shooting range. While Zaitseva was running the penalty loop, she was ahead of German Andrea Henkel, who had worked thoroughly on all shooting ranges. Frenchwoman Marie-Laure Brunet received bronze. In the mass start, the top three winners were the leader of the overall World Cup standings, Swede Helena Jonsson, and Germans Kati Wilhelm and Magdalena Neuner. Zaitseva showed the fifth result.
The legendary Norwegian Ole Einar Bjoerndalen celebrated his home triumph. In the sprint he was second, but in two other races he became the winner. Second in the pursuit was Austrian Simon Eder, third was the Scandinavian's main competitor in the fight for the World Cup, Pole Tomasz Sikora. The results of the mass start are similar - Bjoerndalen, Eder and the Norwegian Emil Egle Svendsen on the third step of the podium. Russian Ivan Tcherezov is fourth. The position of the leaders in the World Cup standings: Bjoerndalen - 924 points, Sikora - 853, our Maxim Chudov - 737, Svendsen - 715.
Matveeva is waiting for the opening of sample "B"
Analysis of the doping sample “A” taken from Russian skier Natalya Matveeva at the World Cup in Whistler, Canada in mid-January, gave a positive result for the presence of the banned drug erythropoietin (EPO). Matveeva is one of the strongest sprinters in Russia, she is a two-time winner and multiple medalist of World Cup stages in this discipline (team and individual races), a participant in the Turin Olympics and two world championships - 2007, 2009).
The head coach of the women's sprint team, Tatyana Revina, in an interview with the All Sport agency, has already stated her confidence that an error occurred during the analysis of sample “A”. The autopsy of sample “B” in the presence of Matveeva is scheduled for March 23 or 24 in Montreal (Canada).
