May 17, 2009 in the conference hall of the Physical Institute. P. Nlebedeva RAS, an outstanding physicist, chairman of the Council of the International experimental thermonuclear reactor of ITER, Sir Christopher Llevellin Smith (Great Britain) made a public lecture "on the way to thermonuclear energy." The lecture was organized by the Dmitry Zimin Foundation "Dynastia" with the assistance of the International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow.
According to K.L. Smith, people should already think about their future and the future of their children in the world without fossil fuel. 24 hundred -length shock bulbs burning in constant mode - this volume of energy is consumed today by the average representative of Western society. According to forecasts, by 2030, energy consumption will increase by 50%. At the same time, a quarter of the world's population currently lives without electricity at all. That is, even if Western society goes to refuse excessive energy consumption, this will not solve the problem. The overall growth in energy consumption will continue at the expense of countries that are vital for the development of the economy.
The guest said that now many mistakenly believe that the construction of thermonuclear reactors will require large financial costs. But if we take into account that the annual turnover of the entire fuel market is $ 4-5 trillion, then only about 4% of this amount will need to develop a new technology. And the cost of electricity produced will be about 10 euro centers per 1 kW/h. At the moment, for example, in Germany, 1 kW/h costs 50 euro centers.
At the end of the lecture, Christopher Llevellin Smith again returned to his work experience in Russia: “Many years ago, I began my scientific activity under the guidance of the magnificent Russian scientist Lev Andreyevich Artsimovich. Once I asked him when a source of thermonuclear energy will be developed. And he answered me: “Thermonuclear energy will be obtained when it becomes necessary for humanity.” I believe his words and think that this moment is already very close. ”
