The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Vladimir Litvin made the final decision to run for the presidency of the country in the upcomingelections . He said this in an interview with the newspaper Kommersant-Ukraine , published on Friday. “The official statement on this subject will be made the other day,” said the speaker.
“I was prompted to make an important decision that I was convinced again - political heavyweights do not want to conduct a serious conversation and serious work. I do not want to be egregious in the desert, but I will appeal, as before, exclusively to people. Otherwise, Ukraine will be assigned to states that did not take place. I am categorically against this and will do everything to prevent this,” the chairman of the parliament explained.
Despite the fact that, according to public questions, the speaker is not included in the top three leaders of the presidential race, Litvin is confident in his victory in the presidential election: "I have never even had the idea to participate solely for the sake of participation. My decisions are always oriented towards the result. In a different way, it has never been."
At the end of May, Litvin hinted that he was expecting to become president, notes Newsru.ua . "Ukraine has a future only if the next president is not Yulia Tymoshenko or Viktor Yanukovych, but someone third," he said. This sounded like "Ukraine needs someone third," which reminded of the pre-election slogan of past years "Ukraine needs Litvin," notes the publication.
Last Tuesday, the Parliament of Ukraine supported the resolution of Litvin and appointed the next presidential election for January 17, 2010. In addition, the speaker is Rada belongs to the initiative to reduce the presidential campaign for a month - from 120 to 90 days. The chairman of the Rada is convinced that the date of the presidential election will not be changed, and the election campaign will begin on September 19. He recalled the decision of the Constitutional Court, according to which deputies have the right to appoint elections, but do not have the authority to cancel them.
The current head of state Viktor Yushchenko, the head of the government Yulia Tymoshenko, the leader of the Party of Regions Viktor Yanukovych, the ex-speaker of the parliament Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the deputy of the Rada Inna Bogoslovskaya, as well as the famous businessman and politician Sergey Tigipko, has already stated about the intention to participate in the presidential election.
Experts consider the main applicants for the victory of Tymoshenko and Yanukovych, who, according to recent surveys, had the highest ratings. But at present, the Prime Minister’s rating is falling, so Tymoshenko’s supporters in the Rada insisted on an earlier date of election.
