Spanish fishermen were allowed to arm themselves to repulse Somali pirates

The Spanish government allowed its fishermen to arm themselves in order to repulse the Somali pirates. According to the SAPA agency, Madrid gave the “good” to ensure that the Spanish Tunzel vessels in the Indian Ocean are hired by private security armed with large-caliber rifles.

However, the agency notes with reference to the Deputy Minister of Defense of Spain Konstantino Mendes, fishing companies are denied a request to place soldiers on their ships, since this contradicts the laws.

Recently, two Spanish Tunzelov were attacked by Somali pirates in the western part of the Indian Ocean, between the Seychelles and Somalia, ITAR-TASS reports. This is not the first case of this kind in recent years.
