
On Saturday, Germany celebrates the anniversary of the country's unification - the day of German unity. 19 years ago, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic united.
This year, the main events are held in Saarbryukkene, the administrative center of the Federal Land Saar, which now presides in the Bundesrat (House of Land). The winner of the elections Chancellor Angela Merkel and Germany President Horst Keller will take part in the Saarbryukkens celebrations.
The main celebrations in Berlin will be held at the Brandenburg Gate. Today, a prestigious quadriga prize will be awarded. One of the awarded will be the ex-president of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev, awarded for the initiative and spirit of renewal in the nomination "Dynamics of Hope". In addition to the former head of the USSR, the head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barrosa and ex-president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Gavel, will receive the prize.
The Quadriga Prize is awarded to those whose courage destroys walls, whose participation builds bridges. The award is named after the quadriga of the horses of the goddess of Victory, located on the Brandenburg gate.
